In 2020, St. John’s is focusing on the idea of generosity.
Who isn’t moved by the yearly viewing of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, as Ebenezer Scrooge is transformed from a mean, miserly misanthrope into a joyful, generous member of the human family? For Scrooge, the transformation happened overnight–with the help of the three ghosts, of course. For most of us, generosity is a journey in which, over time, we grow in an understanding of God’s goodness and our desire to be more like him.
Of course, God is the most generous of all. He gives us life, and breath, and daily bread. He forgives us gratuitously for our many missteps, both big and small. His entire attitude toward us, his children, is one of generous love. And we call this grace.
Listen to this fall’s sermons on the theme of generosity:
- Fr. Houk: Generosity and the nature of God.
- Bp. Stanton: Generosity as the fulfillment of human potential.
- Fr. Houk: Three barriers to generosity.
- Fr. Houk: An invitation to generosity

A Trip Down Memory Lane
A few years back, St. John’s produced a stewardship video called, “Giving Hearts, Grateful Hearts.” The video showcased several of our church’s ministries, illustrating exactly how your giving makes a difference in the way God is at work in and through our parish.
Here are four segments of that video. Enjoy!
Our Legacy Society recognizes generous parishioners who have included the parish in their giving plans.
Naming St. John’s in your will is an easy way to support your parish in the long term. Other giving techniques are available, including making St. John’s a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy, along with more sophisticated vehicles for larger gifts.
Please contact the St. John’s Planned Giving Chairman for further information or a list of attorneys who can advise you about wills and estate planning. The church office can provide the Chairman’s name and contact information.
To date, the St. John’s Legacy Society includes the following individuals:
- Ann and Mike Connolly
- Margery and Michael Hunter
- Christopher Tielens
- H.E. Walker
- Ann Purcell
St. John’s is grateful for the commitment these parishioners have shown by taking steps to support St. John’s financially beyond their annual pledges.
