Jesus knew the headlines of his day and knew how easy it is for people to fall into self-righteousness when compared to the notoriously sinful. But his sobering word is that every one of us needs to repent, and it is only in repenting that we enter life.
Jesus is warned of danger as he Herod seeks his life, but Christ is more concerned about rescuing Jerusalem from impending doom. The question is: does that city want to be rescued? Or do they not understand the danger they’re in?
St. Antony of Egypt once said that a Christian “fully expects to be tested, to be tried, and to be tempted till his very last breath.” If that’s the way it was for Jesus--today, tempted by the devil in the wilderness--why do we think that following Christ will be easy?
